Why Britons Are Holidaying At Home This Summer

Saving money can be a laborious task, but thankfully having something to save for makes it all worthwhile. While many Britons like to take a summer holiday abroad, effects of the credit crunch are making this unviable for some families. For the second year running, many people will be turning to some of the UK's finest holiday destinations for their summer holidays, as old favourites like Spain, Italy and the Caribbean are simply off the cards.

In fact, experts are already warning that Britain's top resorts could well be packed this year thanks to Brits enjoying a domestic holiday, so now is the perfect time to start looking off the beaten track. UK holidaymakers are right to be cautious of splashing lots of cash on an expensive overseas holiday though, as the recession isn't quite over and, besides, the UK has everything you could want from a holiday destination. In fact, VisitBritain is already expecting a 20% rise in the number of British holidays this summer, and that's just for starters. There are many more reasons to stay at home this summer.

Apart from saving money, holidaying in Britain is absolutely the best way to experience the very best the country has to offer. Not many people can say they have truly explored their own country and seen some of its finest natural and cultural sights, but now you can. Britons are realising that they don't have to risk lower standards of service or questionable menus by going abroad, and a 4-star hotel or country retreat can be just as exciting.

For those that like a summer city break on the continent, the UK has cities that will tick all boxes. London is of course a bustling cultural hub where the choice of entertainment, accommodation and experiences is vast, but then slightly more family-friendly places like the Isle of Wight and the Yorkshire Dales can be just as varied. Come August, Edinburgh turns into the world's largest and most spectacular cultural festival. From comedy and music to theatre, dance, street performers and a lot of the unexpected, August in Edinburgh is a holiday in itself.

To see some of the best countryside the UK has to offer, nowhere beats the likes of the Lake District or the Yorkshire Dales. From scaling the Three Peaks to enjoying water sports on Lake Windermere, adventure can be found closer to home than you might expect. And for a beach holiday to remember? Britons are spoiled for choice. Cornwall and Devon have been favourites with the surfing crowds for years now, but South Wales and even the west coast of Scotland have surprisingly warm beaches. In fact, Plockton even has palm trees growing along its High Street!

Add to this an unfavourable exchange rate and the unquestionable ease of planning a holiday in your own country, and the logic speaks for itself. For cheap summer breaks that won't break the bank, start looking closer to home.
