Home appliances and the world of Indovation

How would you live without the latest in complicated home appliances and white goods? The simple answer is very differently and in much less comfort. But the thought won't really have crossed anybody's minds because we can't even begin to imagine life without fridge freezers, washing machines and the like. But a great big chunk of the world is so far behind that they can't even imagine that anyone would've invented a machine that boils water or a machine that washes and dries clothes, let alone be lucky enough to own one.

The big electrical manufacturers have spotted a niche in the market, a niche for products that we had years ago, back when home appliances started to be made, products that the people of nations like India actually need. The term Indovation covers innovation from and for the emerging Indian markets and it must be run by people who understand what it's like to live in India and not someone who is coming from a westernised perspective. The cost of manufacturing appliances in India is on average 10 times cheaper than it is in Germany for example and this is a major consideration for the big players who, if they do their homework, could invest very little in the beginning and end up making a lot of money.

Simplified electricals are what the India people need and a company that can offer this and rival their own over complicated western technology will go far, all the way to India in fact. But there are drawbacks with some professionals in the industry attributing high defects to Indian engineering skills so you get what you pay for I suppose. India and innovation aside, we rely on home appliances and we could probably go back to the basic versions of most machines we've got, after all they did the same job but just had fewer options; for example washing machines had one setting for temperature and speed and they certainly didn't offer to dry your clothes as part of the service. But why should we go back when the washing machines we have now are washer dryers and we can turn down the temperature and use less energy? When dishwashers save us slaving for hours trying to scrub off caked on food because we couldn't be bothered to do it at the time, this is the age where machines allow us to live life to the full and not be tied down by household chores; one day the whole world will be living too.
