Urban Golf isn't exactly new. The brainchild of James Day who, at 20, was head of Stoke Park's teaching school and the UK's youngest ever golf professional to be accredited by the PGA, opened in 2004 in Soho. Branches in Smithfield and Kensington soon followed.
Tucked away in a Smithfields basement, the seven state-of-the-art simulators allow golfers to sample 50 championship courses around the world without having to venture too far from the bar.
For those of you not familiar, you stand in a booth roughly 12-feet squared. Under you, various materials simulate fairway, rough, deep grass and sand trap. You select your course and step on to the tee. Sadly, there's no Ivor Robson to announce you to the eager crowd, butTaylorMade R9 Irons still feels pretty special as you gaze down on of the most famous courses in golf.
You hit your ball, it passes through sensors which detect trajectory, speed and spin before striking the screen and dropping to the floor. The virtual ball takes over and soars down the fairway. It's pretty impressive stuff.
