Pipe bursting: often called trenchless technology may be the best solution.
Two holes are dug; one to expose your horizontal Sewer pipe near the front of your house, and another near the curb (or lowest point) of your sewer main. We run a steel cable through the old pipe, fuse together 20' sections of HDPE pipe into the desired length. At this time, a large cone-shaped hardened steel breaker head is inserted through the pipe and is pulled by hydraulic rams ( 30 ton pulling capacity) splitting the old pipe and creating a channel large enough for the new HDPE sewer pipe. We connect it at each end, add cleanouts, backfill the holes, replace the sod and patch the asphalt or concrete. And, not forgetting clean-up.
Not only does this save the invasive digging but also saves the cost of repairing or replacing a driveway and landscaping. If any other plumbing company tells you that you have to dig up your yard it's because they don't want you to know this technology exists, or don't have the equipment and expertise for trenchless technology. That's not to say that this is the wrong way to replace a Sewer line. It should certainly be looked at as one of the solutions. Drains and sewers may crack due to ground movement, subsidence, tree root infiltration, or corrosion - or they may totally collapse. The result is a structurally defective drain causing repeat blockages or leaks into the surrounding soil.
