Role of sharbat ward in adult women to prevent su ul qinya( iron deficiency anaemia)

In classical literature of Unani medicine, iron deficiency anaemia is called su ul qinya. It is due to zoafe jigar. It is antecedent to istasqa (ascites).

Iron is of great importance in human nutrition. The adult human body contains between 3-4 gm of iron. Iron is important for human body including the formation of haemoglobin, brain development and function, regulation of body temperature , muscle activity and catecholamine metabolism. Lack of iron deficiency affects immune system; it diminishes T- cells and production of antibodies. Besides haemoglobin iron is a component of myoglobin, the cytochromes and certain enzyme systems. Iron is essential for binding oxygen to blood cells. The central function of iron is oxygen transport and cell respiration.

Objectives of study:

To find out the efficacy of sharbat ward for prevention of iron deficiency anaemia in adul women.

To prevent istasqa due to iron deficiency anaemia.

Criteria for selection of cases:

Inclusion criteria

Age between 15-45 Years

Healthy female volunteers

Exclusion criteria

Known cases of HIV positive

Known cases of tuberculosis

Below 15 and above 45 years

Selection of subjects:

Healthy volunteers would be selected from community. The volunteersif fulfilled all the terms of inclusion criteria, would be selected for the study and allocated randomly to test and control groups.

During selection procedure, the complete history, including general physical and systemic examinations, should be recorded on a proforma. The proforma comprised of demographic details, like healthy volunteers's name, age, marital status, age of menarche, duration of bleeding, menstruation cycle, H/o live birth, still birth ,abortion , address and occupation. All the healthy volunteers would be interrogated about their present complaints with duration in detail, which will be noted in chronological order into the proforma.

Dietary habits, types of diet, tobacco chewing etc should enquire as personal history. Family history, regarding same problem should also asked. In socioeconomic history, emphasized will be given on monthly income, education and occupation. After taking history a general physical examination for pulse, temperature, respiratory rate and weight etc also carried out.

Investigations:

The healthy volunteers included in this study will be advised serum iron concentration and haemoglobin concentration before preventive trial and after completion protocol. After that comparison will be done in between case controls.

Study design:

Randomized open case control study.

Sample size:

The total sample size would be taken 60 healthy individuals from community. (30 in test and 30 in control groups)

Allocation of healthy volunteers:

The volunteers will be randomly allocated into two groups, 1st case in test and 2nd in a control group.

Test group:

Test group (30 healthy volunteers), in this group sharbat ward would be advised along with normal routine diet.

Control group:

Control group (30healthy volunteers) would be left on their routine.

Duration of protocol:

For 1 month duration

Assessment:

The effect of sharbat ward would be assessed in the test and control group by taking serum iron concentration and haemoglobin concentration after 1 month of the regime, the pre and post regimevalues of different parameters will be analyzed and subjected to comparison and statistical analysis to evaluate the efficacy.

Result / Observation:

Result regarding demographic data, evaluation of subjective and objective parameters and safety parameters including adverse effects, if any will be presented either in tabulated or graphical form. Then the results will be subjected to suitable statistical tests.

Statistical Analysis:

Appropriate statistical tests will be selected to analyze the data using Instat 2.3 version of graph pad and difference in the treatment groups were considered significant at p
