subject: Qualities Of Good Kitchen Lighting [print this page]

The way the kitchen lights are chosen and installed greatly matters because they set the ambience of the kitchen. However, we forget or neglect this fact when we design or re-decorate the kitchen. Often, we focus our attention on the furniture, appliances and paint color and we simply get a simple fluorescent lamp for the kitchen.

The kitchen is said to be the nerve center of many households because it's the area where the foods are prepared, served and eaten. Apart from this, it's also the area where members of the family hang out. For many families, their private family moments are spent in their kitchens. Because of this, it isn't only the lights' brightness that is important but the ambience of the room as well. The room must have a welcoming, warm and comfortable feeling.

The kitchen lights can be considered good if it possess two qualities, namely: soft and at the same time comfortable for intimate talks and, bright to let you to see the food you're cooking or the dirt in the veggies you are preparing. You need not install additional lights to fit the two requirements because you can combine both.

You can make your kitchen feel homey and warm without sacrificing the way you may prepare the food. An overhead light can help. This light need not to be too bright and it can simply be a little dim. You may use compact fluorescent bulbs on your food counter to give you enough light while preparing the food. If you are fortunate enough to have an island, you may use pendant lamps to light it.

Dimmer switches will make it easier for you to adjust the intensity of the light in the kitchen. Hence you can set it really bright when preparing the food and opt to dim it when it's time for dinner. Through this, you get the two qualities of the light in the kitchen.

The way you arrange and decorate your kitchen matters. However, if you failed to set the right lighting, you will never achieve the look that you want. Hence, when planning for the interior of your kitchen, make sure to include the lighting.
