subject: A Scirocco Milestone [print this page]

The Volkswagen Scirocco is a small 3 door sports hatchback, it was available between 1974 till 1992 and then recently in 2008 it was reintroduced. The original Scirocco was the most successful VW in its segment, 795,650 units were sold up until 1992. The third generation and current model is still in production and VW recently celebrated the 100,000th unit being rolled of the production line at the Volkswagen Autoeuropa - Automoveis Ltda. plant in Portugal.

In just two years VW has produced 100,000 Scirocco units, the Autoeuropa Plant Manager Andreas Hinrichs said The Scirocco is one of the most important cars that we produce. For myself personally, it was a moving moment.

The 100,000th unit to roll off the production line was a Scirocco R 2.0-litre TSI, in Rising Blue Metallic, with a Titan Black interior, radio navigation system, Park Pilot and a tilting sunroof. As well as the Scirocco, the Portuguese VW plant also produces the new Sharan and the VW Eos and employs 3,000 staff.

Industry experts claim the attractive design and sporty stance of the Scirocco leaves a lasting impression, in its debut year it claimed the AutoBILD Design Award and was named Car of the Year by Top Gear magazine.

As well as looking good on the road and scooping up awards, the Scirocco is doing well in motorsport too, the racing version of the Scirocco occupied top ranks at the 24-hour race at the Nurburgring. In its first time in the competition in 2009, the Volkswagen Scirocco GT24-CNG (natural gas) won in the alternative-drive class.

VW has recently released contract hire Scirocco prices, making it easier for people to own and drive the small sporty VW. The contract hire prices will in no doubt attract business users too, which will boost sales of the model too.
