Five Great Tourist Attractions to Visit in Switzerland

Switzerland is one of the smallest countries in Europe but definitely one of the most interesting. Know as the land of the Alps, it is one of the richest European countries with some of the most interesting history, monuments and sights. Centered around France, Austria, Germany and Italy, Switzerland offers some of the most amazing views of the Alps. There are plenty of sights to see in Switzerland and here are five that will leave a lasting impression.

1. Zermatt - There are a number of great ski resorts in Switzerland and Zermatt is one of the best because it is on the Matterhorn, known around the world as the

most famous peak in the Swiss Alps. If you do not want to ski, you can still enjoy the view while dining out or shopping for a keepsake.

2. Swiss National Park - As the only national park in Switzerland this park covers about half of the entire country and is preserved as a sanctuary for wildlife. You cannot spend the night at Swiss National Park but you can certainly appreciate the view. The Alps are all around as you go hiking or driving around, which is why it is one of the greatest tourist attractions in Switzerland.

3. Swiss Transport Museum - Found in Lucerne, the Swiss Transport Museum has locomotives, ships, aircraft, automobile and other modes of transportation on display as well as historical communication. The works of Hans Erni, a Swiss painter and sculptor is there and close by you will find the Planetarium.

4. Geneva Jet D'eau - This fountain was built in 1891 and is found in Geneva. It is considered one of the tallest fountains in the world with the water shooting up to 140 meters high. If you like the sound of cascading water, bring a picnic basket to enjoy the afternoon.

5. The Chillon Castle - Located on the south east shore of Lake Geneva, Chillon Castle is one of the most famous castles in Switzerland. Construction started in the 11th century and Savoy nobility lived there for many years. It is open to the public during the day and has a number of period artefacts around the castle giving you a feel for what life was like back then.

The Chillon Castle is very close to Montreux, famous for their Jazz festival. If you call ahead you should be able to co-ordinate your visit with the concert. Famous artists like Queen and Stevei Ray Vaughn have entertained the crowds there.
