What I'm about to suggest here isn't something that many SEO companies would advise you on. In fact, paid advertising or PPC marketing is a dirty word in most seo agencies. So here it goes:
Use PPC to test SEO keywords.
He's lost it! He's gone mad! Yes I probably have, but hear me out for a second here. Wouldn't it be disappointing for all involved you spent $3,000 per month for six months. That's a total of $18,000, only to discover that those keywords that you have top rankings for don't actually turn into sales. Yes, that's the sound of your jaw hitting the ground. $18,000 investment down the drain, that you'll never get back.
Here's what you should do. Bid on all of the keywords that relate to your business, product or service. Don't be tight here, spend $1, $2 or $3 per click to make sure that your ad gets seen. Send the traffic to a page that asks the visitor to call or take an action and then measure the campaign from there.
If they are calling you can set up 1300 numbers that relate to a certain keyword and you can see that phone number on the phone system at your business. Pretty neat huh? That way, you know exactly which keyword led to the action.
If it is an online product or service then you can use prosper 202 or similar link tracking software. The most important thing here is that you measure which keywords generate the best response. Some keywords won't get you a phone call or order after hundreds of clicks. I recommend that you spend at least $500 minimum on this campaign so you can generate a minimum of 300 clicks to your site.
After this, you will know whether you should even bother with SEO or online marketing at all. You will know whether you're website is optimized for conversions or not. If the campaign generates a response, then roll out the SEO or internet marketing campaign on those keywords that have proven themselves to generate a profit.
