Norwegian Cruise's Epic Star contest has ended and found its winner: Heather and Clay Barnhart. To enter the contest, would-be stars who thought their talent was epic -- singers, dancers, jugglers and the like -- had to submit a video of one minute or less showing off their skills. From the entrants, the panel of judges chose eight semifinalists, and Cruise Log readers narrowed the list down to three finalists earlier this month over 11 days of voting.
A panel of expert judges unanimously chose the Barnharts from a field of three finalists in the three-month-long, Norwegian Cruise Line-sponsored event, which had the aim of finding an "epic" entertainer to perform at the July inaugural of the ship.
The fast-moving, foot-stomping clogging duo will get to perform next month at inaugural festivities for Norwegian Cruise Line's newest ship, the Norwegian Epic, after coming out on top in the Search for the Epic Star cruise contest being held here at the Cruise Log.
For the Barnharts, who are both teachers as well as the owners of the Capital City Clogging Co., the contest win is a bright spot in a tough year. The couple, who met clogging six years ago during a clogging competition and married four years ago, lost everything earlier this year in a fire. Days later, Clay's 101-year-old grandmother passed away.
Heather said that they entered the contest hoping to turn their luck around, and thanks to Norwegian Cruise Line, they certainly have. "We are so grateful to Norwegian, the judges and to everyone who voted for us and cannot wait for the Norwegian Epic inaugural in New York" said Heather.
The Barnharts will receive the grand prize which is a free trip to the naming ceremony and inaugural cruise of the Epic scheduled for July 2-4 out of New York City. The couple also will receive a full seven-day Caribbean cruise on the much-awaited vessel -- the line's largest and most elaborate ever.
