subject: A Look At Recent Trends In Mens Fashion [print this page]

Do you know what makes a fashion trend? Designers would have you think that they make the trends. Designers may start a trend, but they do not have the power to make them. Movie, television, and music stars are definitely trend-setters as lots of people like to copy them, but even they do not make a trend. A trend is made by you and the millions of other men that agree to wear a particular fashion.

Trends can come and go just as fast as a million men can change their mind, which can happen in an instant. We can see this in the speed of the death of a fashion trend. While trends make take awhile to get started, then can virtually disappear overnight when the zeitgeist shifts and men simply do not like it any more.

There are many lost and forgotten trends in the fashion bone yard. One of our favorites are platform shoes that were all the rage during the 1970's and 1980's. At one point everyone decided that they all wanted to be a few inches (up to 4 inches) taller. They all wanted to be everyday people and join "Sly and the Family Stone."

Women still wear platform shoes and they are the source of some of the greatest runway slip and falls which can be seen on YouTube. But platform shoes for men went out of fashion when disco died. Another dead men's fashion is the man bag, which is like a purse for men. Believe it or not, at one point they were very popular. No self-respecting man would be caught dead carrying one of those around now.

Trends for men's fashion extend beyond just clothes. Before when men said they wanted a six pack, they were talking about 6 cans of beer. Now "six packs" are rock hard abs which is what a majority of men want.

It is interesting that drinking too much beer causes a beer belly which is the opposite of a six pack. So you have to put down one type of six pack in order to get the other one. It is too bad you can't just buy a six packs of abs as they take endless hours of gut busting workouts to create them.

Fashion is subject to whim and whimsy but also some things just make good sense. It is not fashionable now (maybe with the exception of cigars) to smoke. Cigarettes have changed from being cool (or Kools) to being only for fools. If you get the urge to light up try something of a greener variety (under a doctor's prescription of course).

To make a new fashion trend someone has to try something new in hopes it will catch on. Designers rack their brains to try to figure out that elusive idea. It takes thinking out of the box so don't be afraid of trying something new if you have a flair for it. Someone has to be the first to try it. Then if ten of your friends copy you and ten others copy each of them, you are on your way to starting a new fashion trend.
