subject: The Importance Of Bathroom Ventilation For Overall Maintenance [print this page]

Bathroom ventilation is a very important element in the overall maintenance of your bathroom; as well as the maintenance involved with the various accessories of your bathroom, including the shower curtain.

Proper ventilation in the bathroom helps reduce the chance that shower curtain mildew, soap scum, and other problems that can arise in a bathroom and shower area that is not maintained properly.

These problems, if left unchecked can cause serious damage to tile, grout, and shower curtains; not to mention the health and safety hazards commonly associated with them.

As such, there are a couple different guidelines you should consider when it comes to the ventilation of your bathroom.

The first and most obvious is to utilize your ventilation fan. Most people think these are mainly for helping to do away with foul odors. While in fact they do serve that purpose, they are mostly meant for use as a ventilation of water vapors in the air that build up during showers. The particles that cause your mirror to fog up when you take a hot shower are what we are talking about here; and these culprits can cause a number of different kinds of problems if left unchecked over a long period of time.

Common Problems:

- Mold

- Foul Odors

- Breakdown of Shower Curtain

- Plumbing Issues

- Breakdown of Cabinet Finishes

- Rust on Hardware

All of these issues can result in a poorly ventilated space over time. Simply utilizing your bathroom ventilation fan can drastically improve the ventilation of your space.

It is recommended to turn your fan on immediately after a shower and ensure it runs for at least half an hour after wards.

Along with your ventilation fan, it is also important to leave the door open to your main bathroom dwelling to allow fresh air to move in and replace the stale air. This helps keep the circulation of the room moving and makes it difficult for water vapor to build up on surfaces.
