A Big Weekend in Cambridge
A Big Weekend in Cambridge

For some reason, I always seem to end up in the right place at the right time. This past summer for example, I booked a trip to Cambridge to visit a friend from university. I paid for my flight months in advance, picked a random weekend and July, and when I arrived, one of the city's favourite festivals was taking place. Talk about luck!

After I checked into the Hilton Hotel Cambridge, I met up with my friend and we started checking out the events of The Big Weekend'. The greatest thing about this festival is that all entertainment is free. Although free entertainment is often just another way of saying crap entertainment, the performers at the Big Weekend were actually quite talented and a pleasure to watch.

Saturday was definitely my favourite day of the festival. The continental market was full of delicious treats like specialty liquorice, handmade chocolate and the usual fried festival fare that's always too tempting to resist. Luckily, I avoided a stomach ache and saved enough room to sample some traditional Asian dishes at the Asian Mela' section of the festival.

The band line-up for Saturday featured Th' Parish', who won the Cambridge Band Competition earlier in the year and a funk-soul group called Chancellors of Vice. The best performance however, was delivered by the headliners, T Rextasy' the Marc Bolan and T.Rex tribute band.

Sunday's activities were unfortunately cut short due to my boss advising me of a business conference in Aberdeen, where he'd already made reservations for me at the Doubletree Aberdeen Hotel. I had to catch the next flight out and didn't have time to check out the world music event that I was really looking forward to. I guess luck doesn't last forever!
