Monte Class
Monte Class

The Hamburg Sud company built and launched the Monte class of container ship consisting of ten ships. On 29 May 2009 the Monte Aconcagua, the last of this series of ten 5,552 TEU container capacity Monte class, was christened in Hong Kong. In 2004, the company launched a container ship named the Monte Cervantes which commemorates their original passenger liner of this name. Another member of the Monte class is the Monte Sarmiento, named for the liner which helped rescue the passengers stranded in Ushuaia following the shipwreck of the original Monte Cervantes in 1930. The Monte Alegre, the ninth in the series was christened in Buenos Aires on 23 March 2009 and thus became the first ship christening in the more than 137-year history of Hamburg Sd to take place in Argentina.

Ship Characteristics

Container ships are designed so that no space is wasted. The Monte Cervantes, like all ten members of its class, has a container capacity of more than 5,000 TEU. TEUs measure the capacity in twenty-foot equivalent units, the number of standard 20-foot containers measuring 20 8.0 8.5 feet (6.1 2.4 2.6 meters) a vessel can carry. Like its sister ships of the class, the Monte Cervantes has an overall length of 272.0 meters, breadth of 40.0 meters, and a maximum draught of 13.2 meters.

Hamburg Sd is adding three further Rio class vessels to its fleet by the end of the year 2010. These ships have a container capacity of 5,900 TEU, making them one bay longer than the ships of the Monte class. The Rio ships are to be phased into the shipping group's Europe - South America East Coast Service, gradually replacing the "Monte" vessels, which will then operate in the Asia - South Africa/South America East Coast Service.
