Today candles come in in just about every size, shape design, colour, and, of course, fragrance you can think of. We thought it would be worth looking at a few of the most common varieties:
Taper Candles - These are long slim candles, usually between 6 and 12 inches in length. They are often found in a range of different colours, though not so often in a variety of scents. They are at their best at the dinner table, held in an elegant candle holder.
Pillar Candles - These are free standing candles which can be scented or unscented. Despite the name, they are not always round in shape but can be found in a number of other shapes and sizes. Although they are designed to burn freely without the need for support, you should make sure to place them in a candle holder, or on a coaster or other flame resistant surface before you light them.
Jar or Tin Candles - These are candles which are poured in to glass or ceramic jars or metal tins, which are designed to make the candle completely self contained as it burns. Most jar or tin candles are scented . The best quality jar or tin scented candles are poured by hand and are often contained in ornately decorated containers.
Votive Candles - These are the smallest of the candles we are considering, usually standing only an inch or two in height. Votive candles were originally plain white and without scent for use primarily in religious rites. Votives are now to be found in a variety of different colours and scents and make a great way of trying a out a number of different scented candles at once.
