subject: Translation And Interpretation As Academic Disciplines [print this page]

There are some branches of translation as an educational discipline: translation and interpretation. The first deals with written texts, and the results of a work are written; the second branch works with oral translation. Both branches are subdivided into different subbranches, like translation aesthetic, scientific, juridical, interpretation word by word and also simultaneous, and others.A TranslationA translation is a type of academic knowledge that balances between creativity and serious systematical scientific techniques. Demands to final text are high, because written mistakes burst upon readers eyes. Oral speech is less strict to wording and allows more inaccuracy. Aesthetic TranslationA translator of aesthetic papers meets an authentic first as a naive reader, and then he/she examines it with eyes of a professional. When he/she starts his/her work, he/she fulfills functions of 3 different people: the one reading an original, feels and values it, the one performing a role of interconnection between a couple of languages, and the one reading and apprehending a translated paper. Differences between Prosaic and Poetic TranslationA poetic translator transfers the concept and the atmosphere of an original; a prosaic one scrupulously transfers style, ideas, atmosphere and structure of the original as much as it is permitted by linguistic concepts. Scientific and Juridical TranslationScientific and juridical kinds of translation requirement from a translator deep knowledge in the area, that concerns his/her work. It's very important in order not to mess up various terms and to understand the way, for example, a mechanism works and not to create a false instruction which may result in an accident. Wrongly translated document does not have juridical power; it reduces translators and his/her customers status. An InterpretationSynchronised and word by word interpretation needs clear, appropriate and faultless transferring of the sense of speakers speech. It's a hard and complicated task.
