subject: Disk Defragmentation - Tips For Preparing Defragmenting Hard Disk [print this page]

Ready to defragment your hard disk? But wait for a minute! Before you do it, you need to do some preparation which can make your defragmentation more effectively and quickly. You need to clean up the junk files, temporary files and check hard disk errors.

1. Clean up the junk files and temporary files in the disk.

When you use your computer over time, there are a lot of junk files like error files and invalid dll files, and temporary files like cookies, history, form data and so on. Those kind of files are the main causes of fragmentations and only add burden to your disk. If you defragment disk without cleaning up first, fragmentation occurs quickly again. You can use some cleanup tools to help you clean them up.

2. Check and fix file system errors.

If there are errors or bad sectors in the hard disk, you won't be able the defragment the volume with bad sectors and it will take very, very long time to defragment. So usually we need to check the disk first. Follow the steps below to check and fix file system errors

1. Open My Computer and right click the volume that you want to check errors.

2. Click Properties and click Tool tap.

3. Go to Error-Checking area and click Check Now.

4. Select Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors.

5. Click Start. This scan and fixing process normally takes a long time, be patient!

After you do the preparations above, you can directly use Disk Defragmenter to defragment your hard disk right away. But in my opinion, Disk Defragmenter is not a really good tool which has a lot of limitations.

I suggest you use Advanced Defrag which can effectively defragment all the hard disk in minutes. You can follow the link below to try it out. Hope this can help you.
