As a parent, my number one concern is always the safety of my children. When allowing others to care for them, I expect that the responsible adult will make safety a number one priority as well. Women who choose to run daycare businesses from their homes take on a huge responsibility in caring for other's children. It is important that daycare business owners purchase furniture that meets current safety standards. In addition, they must take an extra step and do the "little" things that may get overlooked. Finally, it is crucial that daycare business owners purchase an insurance policy that covers accidents that may occur.
Below is a check list of the "little" things to remember. Please note that these safety measures are suggested for your daycare, in no way is this list meant to be a comprehensive list of ALL safety related precautions/procedures. The author shall not be held liable for any incident/accident taking place at your daycare.
_____1. Electrical outlet covers are in place.
_____2. Mini-blinds and Venetian blinds do not have looped cords.
_____3. Smoke detectors are on every floor, in appropriate locations, and batteries are charged.
_____4. Fire extinguishers are checked regularly to ensure they are fully charged.
_____5. There are no high bookcases or furniture that can be tipped.
_____6. Stereos, televisions and computers are against walls to hide wiring.
_____7. Fireplaces, wood-burning stoves & space heaters are properly screened or out of reach.
_____8. Medications are in childproof containers & out of reach.
_____9. Chemicals are out of reach, locked up, and/or kept away from food.
_____10. Scissors, knives and other sharp items are kept out of children's reach.
_____11. Alcoholic beverages are stored out of reach.
_____12. High latches are on all doors and cabinets that children should not use.
_____13. Garbage is secured by child proof latches and stored in a waterproof container with lid.
_____14. All plastic bags are out of reach.
_____15. Any sharp or breakable item is out reach.
_____16. Sharp edges of furniture are padded.
_____17. Stairways are gated and well lit.
_____18. Paint is lead free and there's no chipping/splintering of painted items.
_____19. Pets have been inoculated for rabies and distemper.
_____20. There are no poisonous plants in the home.
_____21. Stairways are gated and well-lit.
_____22. Crib(s) meet national safety standards.
_____23. No soft bedding is being used in order to prevent suffocation.
_____24. Recalled products are not being used.
_____25. First-aid kit is easily accessible.
_____26. There are no drawstrings around the necks of children's clothing.
_____27. Pool area is completely fenced (tall) and gate is locked.
_____28. Children are never left unattended.
_____29. Emergency fire, tornado, hurricane etc. plans are posted.
_____30. You are CPR and First Aid trained.
