The best thing about Halloween is the variety of photos and subjects you can catch. From portraits to action shots to adorable infant photography, the possibilities are endless in this day of imagination. So, as much as possible, bring spare cameras to catch all the action right away. A digital compact camera will do for those moments when flinging out the DSLR are a tad too late.
Go out at Dusk
Although most of the fun during Halloween happens at night with the different parties and trick or treats, it is not the most ideal time to take incredible photographs of the holiday though. Low lighting is a bandit for taking great photographs, so make sure you go out before then. Natural light is still more preferable than what any prepared lighting can do, making costume details still visible.
Bring the right equipment
If not, bring an external flash and diffuser (you don't want the flash to overpower your shots) or a camera that has high ISO capabilities. And when using flash, make sure the background doesn't have any reflective surfaces as this tends to bring a glare. Bring a tripod as well since using high ISO (400 and more) tends to bring in a lot of digital noise, more so if there's a lot of movement from jittering hands.
Set the Mood
It being Halloween, set the mood of your photos and subjects by using low lighting, dark backgrounds and silhouettes. Classic Halloween shots of Jack-o-lanterns whether as background, accessory or main subject are also great starters. One secret to getting a great Jack-o-lantern shot, making it appear brighter and more photogenic is to stick in a flashlight. It's safer too.
