In the 1890s, 10-year-old Yohan is sent away from home to survive on his own as a child laborer. He experiences hardships and overcomes his fears by relying on bravery and hope to make the best of his circumstances.
With his family struggling to survive in late1890s Norway, and his father went on a boat to America to earn much needed money, 10-year-old Johan devices, some plans of his own to help his family. However, his jealous older brother has other ideas and, unbeknownst to his parents, he signed with agent Johann become farm laborer.Now sent to a child hobo, Johan was driven to work on a distant farm to provide cheap labor. Johann embarks on a long, tough journey filled with danger, loneliness and feelings of abandonment. Along the way, he met with two other tramps child 8 years old Anna and her younger brother. Together with other children and vagrants, led by threatening boy Aslak, the group made their way on foot through the countryside with Johan finally arrived at the farm where it is said to work.
