Why didn't Mac Dre go platinum?
Why didn't Mac Dre go platinum?

Why didn't Mac Dre ever go platinum? A valid question from someone who sees Dre's name being rated up there with the best that ever rapped and an argument for those who disagree with that rating. Well things could have been so different.

In the late eighties Mac Dre released two EPs titled "Young Black Brotha" and "California Livin". These were immensely popular in the Bay Area at the time with no real commercial backing, this forced record executives to take note and soon offers were being made to sign him onto a major label. With this sort of commercial backing who knows how popular his music could have become?

The answer to that question is there for all to see in long time rival; E-40. Of course Dre never did sign that major deal, primarily due to his jail time, so the record labels moved onto their next target, E-40, who had quite a lot of success with his single "Mr. Flamboyant".

As we know E-40 went on to release platinum albums on Jive whereas Mac Dre went on to start his own record label and receive the same kind of money for selling 30,000 as he would go platinum with a record label.

So what could of happened if Mac Dre didn't go to jail? Undoubtedly he would have signed with a major label along with E-40, perhaps their rivalry would have ruled the nineties rap scene? Who knows, the only thing I am sure of is that how many records an artist sells isn't an accurate measure of how good they are.
