Electric bikes

An Electric bicycle or an Electric bike or an e-bike, is a bicycle powered by an electric motor to assist with pedaling. They make use of rechargeable batteries and can travel up to 20 miles per hour. Electric bikes are quickly replacing traditional bikes and motorcycles in certain markets. In most countries, electric bicycles are categorized as bicycles rather than motor vehicles.

Electric motorized bicycles may employ different technologies and could vary in cost and complexity. Both direct-drive and geared motor units are used in e-bikes. An electric power-assist system could be added to any pedal cycle using chain drive, belt drive, hub motors or friction drive. The power levels of motors used in e-bikes are determined by the existing legal categories and are generally limited to below 750 watts.

Electric bicycles mainly use rechargeable batteries, electric motors and some form of control. The range of the e-bike is considerably influenced by certain key factors such as efficiency of the motor, capacity of the battery, efficiency of the driving electronics, aerodynamics, hills and weight of the bike and rider. The range of an Electric bike is usually between 7 km (uphill on electric power) to 70 km (minimum assistance). Although the energy costs of operating electric bicycles are comparatively less, the battery replacement expenses will be huge.

Certain Advantages

Ride an Electric bicycle to work instead of taking a car. It does ensure long term financial gains!

Electric Bikes can play an integral role in cardiac rehabilitation programmes. Exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation programmes can significantly reduce the number of deaths in people suffering from coronary heart disease. The patient may feel safer exercising on electric bikes rather than stationary bikes.

Electric bicycles can be categorized as zero-emissions vehicles, as they do not emit combustion byproducts. They have lower environmental impact when compared to conventional automobiles. The small size of the battery pack on an e-bike enables them to recharge via solar power or other renewable energy resources.
