Transformer is a device which is used for increasing and decreasing the AC voltage. Some transformers, isolation transformers, are not able to change the voltage magnitude. This type of device has the same output as the input. They are designed to provide isolation and to ensure the stability of the voltage. Commonly, transformer is used to transfer electricity from one circuit to another one either in a close or far distance.
Transformer has a core with a primary and secondary winding of wires around. Its core is constructed from materials such as soft-iron, steel, or air. Its main function is to transfer electricity from the primary to the secondary winding. It has two types, step-down and step-up transformer. Step-down transformer gives the secondary winding higher voltage than the primary winding. On the other hand, step-up transformer gives the secondary winding less voltage compared to the primary one. Then, how does transformer work?
Transformer works based on the correlation between electricity and magnetism. Compared t the primary winding, secondary winding of the step-up transformer has more coils. Meanwhile, the secondary winding of the step-down transformer contains fewer coils than the primary. The ratio of coils will determine if the transformer decreases (step-down) or increases (step-up) the input.
The core is mainly made of iron since it has high permeability to magnetic flux. The magnetic flux will influence the amount of magnetic which passes through the area. The higher the permeability, the less the resistance offered to magnetic flux flowing through the core. With the existence of magnetic flux, there will be a higher degree of the combination between the secondary and primary coil.
In this modern world, the use of transformer is very essential. It allows the distribution 0f the electricity on a long distance. Commonly, the power generation stations transmit electricity in a high voltage. For this case, the step-down transformer will decrease the voltage to meet the need for business or homes. The output of the transformer depends on the amount of the coils.
