Ah yes but there is one crucial factor that many people miss. Although wild salmon have plenty of essential fatty acids most of us no longer eat wild salmon. In fact almost all of us who buy our fish from the supermarket are actually buying farmed salmon.

Yes these beautiful fish are now being farmed, and it is generally the farmed variety that finds its way onto our plates rather than the wild Alaskan variety. And farmed salmon has around one third of the Omega 3 essential fatty acids that is found in its wild cousins.

Not only that, there's worse. The farmed fish that you may have eaten last night will most likely have been fed antibiotics as well as dye to make its flesh that appealing red color that sells so many fish.

And it gets worse. Studies are showing that the farmed varieties not only have low levels of the Omega 3 essential fatty acids but they also have higher levels of industrial chemicals including PCBs, pesticides and more.

In fact it's sad to say but the government now tells us not to eat too much fish because of toxic contamination of fish, and this also extends to farmed fish.

This may be a shock if you think you're buying healthy fish full of healthy essential fatty acids from the supermarket. But now that you know about it what can you do?

There's no doubt about the health benefits of the Omega 3 essential fatty acids, and these health benefits may even extend to saving your life, because they help reduce the risk of death from heart attack. There's just not a lot of Omega 3 in farmed salmon.

The best, safest and most cost-effective way of getting your daily dose of essential fatty acids is to take high quality Omega3 supplements containing fish oil. These are free of contamination and quite cheap to take daily compared to buying expensive (and contaminated) fish.
