New Facebook Application Offers M.B.A

Rather that turning to Facebook as a distraction from school work, students around the world are logging in and using the social networking site for post-baccalaureate studies. Global M.B.A., which deems itself "the world's first internationally recognized M.B.A. to be delivered through a Facebook application," is part of the London School of Business and Finance and certified by the University of Wales. The application was developed around the idea that students already use Facebook as a major outlet for communication.

Students who want to consider earning an online degree have the option to test out the M.B.A. application free of charge. Video lectures, group study sessions, and interactive tests are available for prospective students to try, and only those who want to take the exams necessary to earn credit have to pay the course fee.

Aaron Etingen, founder and chief executive of London School of Business and Finance, pointed out that in his opinion, one major problem with online education is the "appallingly low completion rate" among students in degree programs at some online schools. By allowing students to try Global M.B.A. free of charge, Etingen hopes to decrease the number of students who pay for online courses but do not actually earn a degree.

Courses in the Global M.B.A. program are divided into ten different modules, each of which contains a lecture, group discussion, and study materials. Modules are paid for individually, and the total cost of the M.B.A. program is about $23,000. Students enrolled in the London School of Business and Finance pay the same amount of money for their degree, regardless of whether they take courses on-campus or online.

The application is popular. More than 30,000 users have accessed Global M.B.A. since its launch in late October. Etingen predicts that within the next year, 500,000 students will test the application for free.
