Security in the Home

Crime figures are steadily dropping in the UK, but keeping your house secure is vital. Older people are more worried about crime than the younger generations, and with regular stories hitting the press about crimes on pensioners, they can hardly be blamed. It may be that they are living alone, or more nervous than when they were young, but securing the house is an important issue regardless of your age.

Install peepholes in your doors, so you can see who is there when someone knows on the door. If you contact social services, they can refer you to have these installed at no cost, which is a great bonus. Make sure that you have a mortise lock on the door, for added security. If someone is trying to barge through and you have a mortise lock on as well as a standard one, it will make it much harder for them. Also make sure that your hinges on the door are sturdy. If you have glass panes n your front door, replace them with laminated glass, so it makes a thief's job a lot harder when trying to smash it.

According to the police, fitting window locks makers that chance of being burgled greatly reduced. Many Home Insurance companies insist on window locks, as they are very safe. Some ensure that the windows only open part way, so that regardless of if the window is open or not, no one can get in.

Security lights are another great idea, as not only do they identify to you that something is outside, but also to your neighbours.
