subject: Make-up Musts For Women 40 And Over [print this page]

The older we get, the more we are drawn to beauty supplies and cosmetics in an effort to retain the appearance of youth. As fine lines begin to appear, women need to adjust the way they apply their makeup in order to look their best.

Women tend to be creatures of habit, but as you grow older, you may need to change a few of those habits in order to put your best face forward.

Deep, dark and warm: As we age, we lose some of the natural colour of youth. Skin becomes paler and a little more washed out looking. Use foundations that are slightly darker than the colour of your skin to add some depth and tone.

Eyeshadows should always be warm and earthy rather than pale and frosty. Avoid using pink or beige tones as these will lighten your face, and inadvertently make dark circles under the eyes more apparent.

Lift the eyes: Applying eyeliner to both top and bottom lids may not even be necessary. Lining only the top lid will add a lift to your eyes, where as the bottom lid will draw your eyes down. If you must line both top and bottom, make the top lid darker and bolder than the bottom.

As for eyebrows, start using them to your advantage. Rather than pluck them pencil thin, leave them fuller to add shape and definition. Eyes become puffier looking as we grow older, so super thin eyebrows will only accentuate this problem, whereas fuller eyebrows will add balance.

Get some rosy cheeks: As aging sets in, the natural pigmentation of the skin is lost, so feel free to be liberal with the blusher. A nice warm colour on your cheeks will give you a youthful glow and add some much needed depth and tone to your skin.

While you can't turn back the hands of time, a few simple changes to your routine can keep you looking your best at any age.
