Just finished watching Dabangg, Abhinav Kashyap's sterling debut performance. Anurag Kashyap has, at different times, made movies that have really produced a sensation of admiration down my throat. The younger brother too, was good, as far as Dabangg is concerned. The movie was good, I am not sure whether it was as good as the revenues it has already generated. Salman's acting lacked precision. But it didn't matter much because the character of Chulbul Pandey did not demand precision. One of the other good peripherals that I found in this movie was that the central character is not an abode of all wisdom and ethics of the world. The backgrounds chosen for the movie were excellent. Anurag Kashyap is very good at it, and he best exhibited it in Ishqiya. The younger brother is not bad either.
Now let me shift to the topic which the title suggests. Dabangg is a buzz today, tomorrow it will be supervened by a Dhobighat or something else. But there are few things which are like pine trees, evergreen. Social networking sites are the most common examples, that sustain evergreen buzz. Let me tell about a recent incident first. One of my friends came to my room with a puzzled face and told me that his mood was not alright. Very soon, he realised that I was not going to suggest any cure to the problem. The reasons were very simple. Firstly, he did not know the problem himself and secondly, he was not ready to listen to me, when I was suggesting the areas where he maybe facing tough grasses on his instep arch, areas where his brain must have floundered. He went back to his room and opened his Facebook account and voiced his predicament to all of his about 600 'friends', bound in usual illustrious SM (status message), that he is used to change about twice everyday. Soon, the comments began to pour. Facebook declared his eerie situation as the Top News among his friends.
Here, my friend should not be judged, whether he was right or wrong. But what the story reveals is why the social networking sites are so successful. The number of advantages of an account on these sites are endless. My friend, found the usefulness of Facebook, and received few comments on his SM that made him smile, laugh and the bee was back to the hive. But there was a twich at the same place. What the desire to receive condolences from his friends snatched from him, was the time he could have spent on self-exploration. What I know from my past experience is that whenever such a plight strucks someone, he/she needs some time away from the world and do some self-exploration which in some cases amounts to self-assessment and even soul-searching. But the problem is that the word 'searching' has taken completely different meaning today. I can't be wrong if I say that the word 'searching' has been replaced by the word 'Googling' in the world of at least of 75% of the people who can afford to reach to this article.
Facebook has created an illusion of a version of globe inside a computer screen. The world is entirely different to what it was about a decade ago. Searching, as I said, is now Googling. Chatting is the bread-butter, lunch, snacks and dinner of many of my friends. Friends in adjacent rooms talk to each other online. Groups are made on Google. Emoticons had been invented in 19th century,but have never been used as wildly as they are now. Had the inventors known it then, they would have got the emoticons patented. Popularity is ranked on the basis of number of results that Google search returns of a persons' name.
But the discussion remains rudimentary if we don't talk about Twitter. There are a millions of wretched souls around us who are yearning for making news and fame badly. Twitter has done the business effortlessly. Of course, association with people like Sania Mirza, Lalit Modi, Shashi Tharoor has helped. And what is more unbelievable is the committment that the celebrities have developed to Twitter. Shashi Tharoor, after a rocking journey in Union Ministry finally decided to resign. Lalit Modi has been axed and was literally humiliated when he was sacked from the post of IPL Chairman, that IPL which he had himself sketched from the churned birds of his hat. Kevin Pieterson, recently celebrated his axing from the England team on Twitter. However, none of them have broken their relationship with Twitter.
The social networking sites are a huge hit and the established names are supposed to continue the golden run for a long time. It will be very interesting to keep track with the developments and maybe after a decade compare the scenario between then and todays. The advantages are innumerable. There are few knots here and there. However, those can be manged as of now. There are more serious problems that need to be addressed immediately.
