TERAFIL Water Filter - CSIR - IMMT Technology

Recently India International Trade Fair during November 14-27, 2010 New Delhi, India was conducted by India Trade Promotion Organization, I have seen this simple water purifier technology like a lay man in the CSIR Technofest 2010, showcased by Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, New Delhi.

I personally felt that this technology should be available throughout world for drinking water requirements of people.

When I asked person concerned about the technology, he explained that wood saw dust, red mud, river sand were mixed and made it as a burnt plate purifier candle like what we see as a normal candle in the water filter. It is look like burnt mud plate.

Pure drinking water is the present day requirement for anybody in the world. The basic requirement for anybody is pure drinking water for not to get affected by any disease. Seventy percent of diseases are water borne diseases only and people mostly affected due to contaminated water.

The cost of Water purifier is Rs.450/- only (Ten US $) for two plastic tubs with plate type candles. The capacity of purifier is enough for daily water requirements of any house. The invention or concept is very simple purifying through sawdust, mud and river sand mixed as a plate candle. Down plastic tub is getting purified water from upper plastic tub which has fixed three plate type candles.

The beauty of this technology is the candles will come about three years and just wash it out if any residue is there after purifying the water. Again I felt that cost may come further down if it fixed in mud pot to Rs. 100/- to reaching the technology to the rural poor. The technology is the candle which was made with sawdust, red mud and river sand. Pot makers can also engaged with this work and get some earnings out of it.

Purified water is better than the steel filter water what we are using now and every three months we use to change these candles also. This filtered water can be used from third day onwards for drinking purpose. They tested the water and some BIS (Bureau of INdian Standards) standards and specifications for this technology as a pure drinking water. It may not kill in depth harmful bacteria like boiled water but it almost cleans the water and it is potable. This is enough for avoiding the diseases in the rural areas.

I came to know that this technology was given to Delhi manufacturer and these water purifier may be available with them in the delhi market after some time. There is no electricity required for this TERAFIL water filter.

This technology is developed by IMMTI, Bhubaneswar (Institure of Minerals and Materials Technology) a laboratory under aegis of CSIR, New Delhi. Below links may be useful for interested who wants to know about the technology
