Let me guess, you are an avid player of the Facebook game Mafia wars and now you have your eye on Gangster City, another Facebook game by Playfish that is just exploding with popularity even though it has only been out a few months. This is where I'm at also but I wanted to share some interesting information about both of these mob family social games and even give a few gangster city secrets and tips that can be a great jump start on the competition if you decide to try out the newer mob family game.
Zynga's Mafia Wars game is still a huge hit among Facebook fans and probably one of the most appealing things about that game is the fact that all of your friends are playing it. Let's face it, it is a lot of fun and very motivating to beat your friends and then rub it in? Come on, be honest with yourself. I don't mind admitting that this is a key reason why I still spend way too much time playing Mafia Wars. But in some ways I am getting a bit bored with it and that what brought me to Gangster City initially. Let's compare a few of the features and functions of the two games.
If you try playing Gangster City you will discover right off that the presentation is very different than in Mafia Wars. You become part of a story line in Gangster City and with the high quality graphics and audio it's almost like you are playing a part in a movie. Mafia Wars is much less personal and is more like a traditional computer game where you are taking action or doing different things from menu selections.
Whether you are negotiating a deal with someone to buy a car, or you are doing a job or fighting someone from another family, in Gangster City each encounter is visual and you are interacting with the other person. In Mafia Wars or most any other game you typically get some kind of menu that maybe compares power levels for you and your adversary but it will use that impersonal style where you are thinking more about statistical comparisons and less like you are part of a story.
Another cool thing about Gangster City, to further enhance the story line you find yourself going to different locations in the city and you decide where you want to go and view on a map where your location is, and then at your destination the "movie" continues as you interact with people and take care of whatever task you need to accomplish. If you know anything about the Dick Tracy style comic books of the 1940s or 1950s, Gangster City's presentation will remind you of this and you will probably be hooked. Mafia Wars cannot compare at all to Gangster City as far as presentation, story line or graphics go.
There are some things similar between Gangster City and Mafia Wars of course. There is the obvious theme of doing jobs to support and grow your mobster family. There is also the need to generate cash from a number of different sources and keep the cash flow going so that you can grow your family and your property investments. In both games you can make a steady flow of cash by collecting off of your properties and you make money and acquire objects by doing jobs. There are more mundane ways to get some cash but in both games you want to find creative ways to avoid spending a lot of time just waiting to get a little cash of a little more energy so that you can continue. There are inexpensive guidebooks that will help immensely with cash building strategies so keep that in mind, it will make either one of these games a lot more enjoyable.
In both of these Facebook games you need cash to buy all the weapons and upgrades that can be needed to successfully complete a risky job or you might need a certain collection of objects to have power on a higher level of the game, buy something specific on the Black Market, etc. If you are new to Gangster City I will tell you now that it is important to have a strategy quickly if you want to avoid getting into the position of needing cash and finding you need to either a) do a lot of waiting and re-logging into the game to collect a little cash, or b) pull out your credit card to buy game cash with real money. I have done this before but I don't like it and now I do everything possible to avoid that.
Gangster City or Mafia Wars. So, which is the best mob family game? The old stand by Mafia Wars? The new Gangster City with similar objectives but much different presentation and user experience?
I love the competition and the mob mentality stuff and I know some people might roll their eyes at this, but hey for me this is just a good outlet for my competitive nature and it works for me. Both Mafia Wars and Gangster City give me this kick but personally I am spending more and more time in Gangster
