Diabetes mellitus is a nutritional disorder, characterized by an abnormally high level of blood glucose and the excretion of the excess glucose in the urine. The normal fasting blood sugar content is 80 -120mg. per 100 ml of blood, this can go up to a level of 160 mg. per 100 ml of blood two hours after meals. Anything above these levels can be termed as diabetic levels. It occurs in all age groups but the most common sufferers are obese people in middle or older age

Types of diabetes
1. Type 1 diabetes
2. Type 2 diabetes
3. Gestational diabetes
Type 1 diabetes is also known as insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) or juvenile onset diabetes. In this type the body stops producing insulin or produce less to regulate the level of blood glucose.
In Type 2 diabetes the body is not able to use insulin secreted by the pancreas. It is also known as non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus or adult onset diabetes. The most sufferers are people of middle and older ages. It can be controlled with diet, exercise and weight loss
Gestational diabetes occurs during the second half of pregnancy and disappears after the delivery.The women suffering from gestational diabetes have higher chances of type 2 diabetes in the later stages of life.
Causes
1. The major cause of diabetes now days are the nutritional efficiency.
2. Consumption of diet rich in carbohydrates may also relates to in casual factor for diabetes mellitus.
3. Stress and mental trauma is another factor that leads to diabetes.
4. Decreased physical activities and lack of physical exercise may also cause diabetes.
5. Diabetes is said to be running in families thus can be considered as a hereditary factor.
6. Certain disease of pancreas may also lead to causing diabetes mellitus.
Diet Plan for Diabetes
Eating right for diabetes comes down to three things:
1. What you eat. Your diet makes a huge difference!! You should eat mostly plant foods, cut back on refined carbs and sugary drinks, and choose healthy fats over unhealthy fats.
2. When you eat. Diet is part of it, but keeping regular meal and snack times also affects your blood sugar levels and will help to keep them more constant.
3. How much you eat. Portion sizes matter. Even if you eat very healthy meals, if you eat too much you will gain weight, which is a factor in diabetes.
Home Remedies of Diabetes
1. Mango leaves also fight diabetes. Take about 3-4 mango tree leaves and boil them in water. Have this water when warm.
2. For people who have higher sugar level, chew 3-4 leaves of jamun (Syszygium cumini) in the morning and evening. One can also mash 3-4 leaves of jamun tree in half cup of water and drink it.
3. Dip 60 grams of fresh ripe fruit in 300 ml of boiling water and cover it. After about half an hour, mash the jamun and strain it. Drink this juice three times a day.
4. Mix 3 tablespoons of cinnamon powder to a liter of water. Heat this water for 20 minutes. Strain this mixture and have the water when warm.
5. Another easy yet useful home remedy to reduce blood sugar level would be to chew two leaves, each of neem and bilva in the morning.
6. Soak a few almonds and keep them overnight. Have them first thing in the morning in an empty stomach.
7. Consume ten leaves each of basil, neem and belpatras with a glass of water on an empty stomach in the morning. This would be very useful in treating diabetes.
8. Take a jar of water and immerse the peels of green plantain, after it has been washed. Intake this water three to four times in a day.
9. Consume 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar thrice a day to relieve of diabetes.
10. Diabetic patients should increase the consumption of soybeans, celery, cucumbers, string beans, onion and garlic in their diet.
