Bernard Duffy spoke at length on the challenges faced by business due to the accelerated growth of the sustainability agenda. He described how current purchasing decisions are increasingly influenced by sustainability, and how Generation Z will accept sustainable living as part of the fabric of their lives.
The business world is
on a collision course as two meanings of sustainability compete. Can we sustain business whilst being sustainable? Can we hope to sustain business without being sustainable?
What Bernard made clear was that the answer lies in innovation. We cannot hope to sustain businesses and the environment without ruthless, efficient and transformative innovation. We must understand where and when to innovate, not just focussing on the products we sell, but the very nature of our businesses.
Too many organisations are toying with the sustainability agenda, treating it in a similar way to the Information Technology agenda 30 years ago. Businesses must take sustainability seriously, putting at the heart of their business, meeting the current and future expectations of their customers.
Bernard concluded by explaining We have discussed today how, in time, sustainability will become a defining factor in consumer decisions and how that time is coming very soon and your business must be prepared. Prepared not just to change as required, as that is the formula for failure or business death, but to out-transform your competitors in a structured, holistic manner.
