subject: What Makes An Internal House Door Truly Bespoke? [print this page]

In today's market place, Internal house doors are available in many styles and can be purchased in numerous shapes, designs and sizes. Looking on the web can be a minefield due to the vast numbers of companies out there.

To help you along your way I've put together a list of points to aide you in finding a truly bespoke door.

What to look for when choosing a truly bespoke door, and questions to ask:

What quality of timber has been used to ensure long-term stability?

Will these timbers be sourced from sustainable forests?

Choice of sizes, i.e. will the door be made to measure.

Designs i.e. what designs are available, can these be changed to suit your needs.

Will the door panels be solid timber or veneered.

Do the manufacturers use a traditional mortise and tenon construction for the door?

Location of manufacturer, i.e. will your door be made in China?

Does the manufacturer belong to any recognised trade body i.e. 'Federation of Master Builders' or 'The Guild of Master Craftsmen'

How long has the manufacturer been producing bespoke doors?

Does the company offer a factory fitting service saving on site installation time and mess?

What is the price level of the Internal doors? If they are cheap it's not likely they be truly bespoke or made from a quality timber!

Can you choose the finish on the door i.e. a lacquered or oil finish. Usually a truly bespoke manufacturer will have a professional in house polishing team to hand.

Lead times. If you order today and your door comes tomorrow are you really receiving a bespoke door?

When speaking to a company do they genuinely understand your requirements and can they offer professional advice?

Customer service should be of the highest standards when dealing with your order, anything less should trigger off alarm bells.

Check out web pages and get a feel for the companies you are looking at, if they look quality hopefully their products will be too.

A truly bespoke manufacturer will be able to offer further products to enhance your home. Staircases, Panelled Linings, Flooring and Mouldings can relate to internal house doors giving consistency of timbers and finishes.

I hope these points help. There are a lot of things to consider when choosing your new internal door. Get it right and you will be really pleased you did your homework.
