The City of Oakville is separated from Toronto, which is 40km away to the West, by the City of Mississauga. Oakville was a town that absorbed the little villages around it, and in 1962, became a city. It has since been included into the Greater Toronto Area. One of the greatest fun things to see, and, if you are brave enough, to take part in, are the activities of the Polar Bear Club. This annual New Year's Day event sees crowds of people take the plunge. And that is what it literally is, to take the plunge into the icy winter waters of the lake. Mostly for fun, but also with the noble cause of supporting charity, swimmers and spectators raise funds and into the water the brave ones go. Once they have got themselves thoroughly wet and icy cold, they are adopted into the Polar Bear Club. A great deal of fun is had by all, and the charities are the richer for it.
