7-Zip is a software data compression and archiving files running under Windows. It can also be used with other operating systems (Linux ...) through, for example, the Wine project. It has nevertheless been ported to Linux under the names and p7zip Q7Z / PeaZip (for GUI).
It is free software licensed under LGPL, AES code is under BSD license and the code is licensed under unRAR mixed (LGPL restrictions unRAR +). It competes with WinZip and WinRAR, which are equivalent owners shareware (or shareware).
The program runs in command line or with GUI translated into 74 languages including French.
It supports the following file formats:
* Archiving: TAR and SPLIT
* Compression / Decompression: 7z, ZIP, GZIP, BZIP2 and XZ.
* Decompression: APM, ARJ, CAB, CHM, CPIO, DMG, Doc, HFS, ISO disc image, LZH, LZMA, MBR, MSI, NSIS, DEB, RAR, RPM, UDF, HDV, WIM, XAR, Z
7 Zip portable also supports the process of 256-bit AES encryption and creating self-extracting archives.
The native 7z format and XZ are open modular formats that allow the storage of files compressed using different algorithms, with Unicode filenames. By default, the software creates files in 7z archive format (with extension .7 z) using the LZMA compression algorithm, which allows the creation of archives that are more compact formats such as ZIP, RAR or that or ACE, when the files are not compressed media type (pictures or music). The other currently available algorithms in the 7z format are PPMd (effective on text), bzip2 (less effective than LZMA, but could use a large number of cores a processor to be faster and more robust to corruption of archive) and BCJ2 (used in conjunction with LZMA for executables).
