subject: What To Do When The Baby Has Insomnia [print this page]

If you are a parent or if you care for a child, you know just how frustrating it can be when the little one can't sleep at night. The child may have colic, or the child may simply not be able to sleep. Many different factors can contribute to a child's inability to sleep through the night. Parents should take their baby to the pediatrician to make sure that there is nothing wrong with the child physically that is causing him or her to stay awake when they should be sleeping. If the doctor tells you that the child is perfectly healthy, then you might want to try some of the following tips and tricks to help the baby get some rest. One of the time-honored methods of getting the child to sleep is to rock him or her in a rocking chair. The slow and soothing motion helps to put many babies to sleep, and the closeness to your heartbeat helps as well. You have to be very careful when you put the baby in the crib though, as the slightest jostling can sometimes cause the baby to waken and begin crying again. Some parents will place the baby in the car seat and go for a drive around the neighborhood to achieve the same affect.

Many parents, even those who can't carry a tune, will sing to their child while holding him or her. The sound of the voice and the vibration will sometimes lull a child into sleeping.

Check your daily schedule and see if the baby is napping too much during the day. A child that sleeps away much of the day will be rested and full of energy at night. This will make it very difficult for the baby to sleep through the night.

Technology has also made helping a baby get to sleep and stay asleep much easier. You can find a baby sound machine that can emit different types of soothing sounds. White noise machines are very popular, but you can find many new machines that offer more than just the sound of white noise. The various sounds on the machine can help to relax the baby's body and mind, thus allowing sleep to come much easier.

Try the above tips to help get your baby to sleep through the night. Both you and the baby will be much happier when you are able to get all of the rest you need.
