subject: Stay In Your Home For Longer - Get A Stairlift [print this page]

If you are elderly or disabled it can become taxing to negotiate the staircase in your own home. While many people choose to downsize into bungalows and single-storey constructions, there are technological solutions available which can help you stay in your home for longer. While these technological solutions may seem extravagant or expensive, doesn't compare to the stress and expense of moving house altogether.

If you're struggling to navigate your own home, then a stairlift is a great choice. If you're already in a wheelchair or mobility scooter than perhaps a wheelchair lift might better suit your needs. If it alleviates your need to move into a more negotiable home then just imagine how much time, money and stress these technological solutions can save you. Modern stair lifts are incredibly easy to use, and can be fitted on both straight and curved staircases relatively quickly and easily.

Stairlifts generally consist of a special chair which sits on a track which runs alongside the staircase. The chair has a kind of motor attached to it which moves the chair up and down the stairs. They are easy to operate and install, and can be used on both curved and straight staircases.

Obviously the mechanism and the installation of a stairlift is somewhat easier on a straight staircase, but curved staircases pose little problem. They are usually a little more expensive, as they have to be tailored specifically to the staircase in question. Prices will vary on the length and height of the staircase, as well as the number of complexity of any bends.

If you think that installing a stairlift could be too expensive then you might want to consider investing in a second-hand, reconditioned stairlift. These are often just as good as the brand new versions, but have obviously been more substantially road-tested than new ones.

If you're having troubles getting around your home, then it's time to start thinking about solutions. Have you started sleeping downstairs or only using the downstairs toilet? Enjoy your home and make it all accessible again with a stairlift or wheelchair lift. It's amazing how much small technological solutions, such as stairlifts, wheelchair lifts or mobility scooters can change your life. Mobility scooters in particular can really make elderly or disabled people feel free again, free to live their life. Sometimes technology really does make life better for people, and mobility aids are one example of technology enhancing life.
