Whether you are a student, a full-time mom, a retiree or a newly-retrenched employee, there are a lot of ways to get back on your feet, so to speak. Looking for an employer might not even necessarily be the answer to get your financial sanity back.
Try setting up a business instead. You might think I have gone mad for suggesting that you put-up a new business during a recession, but if you already have your back against the wall, what else is there to do but try whatever option there is to gain some semblance of financial security back, right?
Besides, I'm not suggesting you do something grand or something that requires a trunk-full of capital. What I have for you are tips on how to find a new home business opportunity, not suggestions on how to bury you deeper into debt.
New home business opportunity # 1: Convert your home into a place of "business". How many rooms do you have? How many rooms do you need? How many rooms are currently occupied? If you have a whole section of your house to spare, why not rent it out? A lot of people who lost their homes to the housing market plunge are looking for a place to say, whether for the short or long term. If your home is an empty nest, take a family in and split all the expenses. That way, both families only carry 50% of the burden of having a roof above their heads.
New home business opportunity # 2: Sell your skills. What skills do you have? What were you doing when you were employed? What are you good at? A lot of companies are now hiring freelance workers as a survival strategy instead of retaining regular employees; those companies are your best bet to get some income to flow in. Or, set-up a small consultancy firm right at home and get to continue what you were doing in your old job, only this time, you are your own boss.
New home business opportunity # 3: Sell your stuff. Or be a broker yourself to your neighbors as a "yard sale expert" and offer to sell their stuff on your lot. Less hassle for them, more income for you.
