Throughout your kitchen there will be different requirements for adequate kitchen lighting. The more time you spend getting the lighting right, the more likely you will be to having a working kitchen that provides you with the best function possible. Keep in mind that lighting is necessary, in the right amounts, dependent on the tasks to be completed in that space. Each area has a unique need. The following are some basic guidelines to help you to select the best lighting based on the actual area that lighting will be placed in.

- If you are adding pendent lights to any areas in the kitchen, get the wattage right. These lights will be ideal for areas where you will accomplish tasks but have enough overhead room. Consider pendent lights with 60 to 75 watts for the best lighting. Place these at about 20 inches apart for the best results.

- Recessed lighting is ideal for the kitchen since headroom for work spaces is often limited. Placed recessed lighting under cabinets or in the ceiling. They should be spaced between 16 and 24 inches apart, based on the amount of lighting needed and the style of light used.

- The cooking area also needs proper kitchen lighting. In most situations, it is best to use a built in hood light here since it is protected from any incidents. In addition, be sure that this lighting is has proper wattage. At least 60 watts is recommended. Recessed lighting may be used here, as well, though protective shields need to be installed.

A variety of options in styles are available for each of these kitchen lighting options. Do take the time to select products that provide the right light and look for your space.
