subject: The Benefits Of Buying Used Cars [print this page]

Purchasing a car, whether brand new from a main dealership or second hand from a private seller can be an exciting experience. Your old car may not be as reliable anymore and you need to upgrade, or you simply might just be looking for a change. Either way, although it can be a big investment, buying a car can be an exciting, if not somewhat daunting, experience.

Many people purchase brand new cars for various reasons and whilst this does have some benefits, buying used cars is widely regarded as being the most beneficial way of owning a car.

Above all, the main benefit that buying used cars brings with it is the fact that they are almost always cheaper than their new counterparts. Of course, some car models do hold their value and occasionally increase in their worth, but these are generally classic cars and any car that can be deemed suitable for day to day use will usually steadily decrease in value from new, until it reaches a certain plateau.

Some people prefer to purchase brand new cars for several reasons, one of which they believe is because they will get better value for money and another being that their car will not have any problems. However, purchasing a used car that is around one year old can prove much more beneficial to the owner in both of these aspects.

When purchasing a brand new car, many people do not realise that the car loses its most value within the first twelve months of owning it, which can be up to thirty percent and actually begins to lose value as soon as it is driven off the forecourt. The price will then drop considerably within the first twelve to twenty four months, slowing down for the remaining thirty six months until the decrease is small but continual for the remainder of the cars life.

Further to this, problems other than those that are expected such as the need for new tyres and brake pads will often be due to a problem with the manufacturing and will therefore generally become apparent within the first twelve months of owning the car. Whilst the car will still be under warranty, it can take a lot of time to take it back and forth to the garage, as well as being unsafe to drive should something go wrong when travelling long distances or at speed.

One of the benefits of buying used cars for some people is that the range of vehicles that a used car dealership may have on offer can be somewhat exhaustive. Whilst a main dealer that sells new cars will only have their own makes and models, with the exception of a handful of cars that have been part exchanged, a used car dealership will have cars to suit all needs and budgets, from cheap one litre cars to travel around town in through to large 4x4 vehicles that are built for comfort and ideal for travelling up and down the motorway in.
