subject: How Best To Sell Cars Privately [print this page]

When the time comes to sell your car, there are several options open to you to suit your individual needs and requirements. For example, you may be looking for a quick sale and instant cash and therefore it is highly recommended to take your car to a dealership and have them buy it off you.

However, if time is not particularly important but money is, then it is advised to look at the many different ways of selling your car privately, as these can have the greatest financial returns.

Traditionally, to sell cars privately, an advertisement in a classified advert section of the local newspaper or a car magazine would be placed with information about the car, occasionally a picture and the contact details of the seller. From here, prospective buyers would contact the seller, see and test the car and if all is well, purchase it, generally after some negotiation has taken place.

Whilst this method of selling cars is still popular, there are now various other ways to sell cars that may be more suited to you and your needs as an individual seller.

For instance, utilizing one of the many internet auction websites that are available is currently one of the most popular ways to sell cars. Working in a similar fashion to standard auctions, sellers can input a vast amount of details and copious amounts of pictures to display exactly what the car is like. Sellers then determine what they would like the starting bid of the auction to be, what the reserve price is (if required) and how long the auction is to last for.

Further to internet auction websites, classified advert websites are a fantastic way to sell cars online. Similar to internet auction websites, classified advert websites work in the same way as their offline counterparts and require for the seller to input all of the details of the car that they have for sale and their contact details. The difference between this option and the previous is that classified advert websites do not tend to allow for pictures and have a fixed price and therefore can be considered, by some, not as effective as internet auction websites.

One of the most important points to note when selling cars privately and particularly online is that detail is imperative. If a car is for sale online and the seller has only placed some basic information in the details section, then this can put a considerable amount of people off, as they feel that the seller has something to hide. In a similar light, if sufficient information is provided but it is wrong, then it can cause a whole host of problems, especially if the car is sold and the person discovers the problem soon after the sale.

There are many ways to sell cars privately and whilst the traditional methods are still effective, the online options that are available and now widely used should be looked at to ensure that the most suitable and effective way to sell your car is chosen.
