A Meeting at Night - The Angel and the Shepherds
Shepherds abiding in their Field Photo by Sharon Phillips
Just after Jesus was born the first group of people the Angel of the Lord would makean announcement to would be the Shepherds who were abiding in the field keeping watch over their flock by night. I find this very interesting because the profession of a shepherd signified the ultimate role Jesus would become to those who would make the decision to follow him as Savior and Lord. He would become their shepherd and not just any shepherd but a Good Shepherd who would carefully watch over his flock meeting every need of each sheep and this Good Shepherd would give His life for the sheep at the appointed time.
I also appreciate the fact that the shepherds were watching their flock by night. In life when we are confronted with very difficult challenges, it feels like night. At night the path is not as easily seen. At night the very objects we saw during the day now take on an unfamiliar and unknown appearance. At night a road we know well and have traveled many times during the day becomes a road we now must carefully approach each turn with great caution.
If you are looking for a Good Shepherd, I recommend Jesus The Christ, The Only Begotten Son of God, who is able to lead you during the day and night seasons we all must encounter.

8 Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid. 10 Then the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people.
