By now, I'm sure that the majority of you have already tried your hand at some form of the internet, whether it's tweeting on Twitter, getting on FaceBook and competing with friends on Farmville to see who has the best farm, or even talking on Skype. Some of you may have even tried your hand at blogging, using links, keywords, and SEO to be sure that it is noticed, while others prefer to watch the videos on YouTube.
Then there are those who really aren't into the new media thing at all. They are the ones who get on the computer, type a few words into Google, find what they need and end it there.
Everyone knows that social media will someday, in the not so distant future, be the main way to connect with others. Unfortunately, I didn't want to be part of this new media thing. I was pretty content with my newspaper, radio, and television. Then I started my masters degree. That's when the fun began.
I had to purchase my own computer. I chose an Apple. Then, in my first class, I had to open a FaceBook and Twitter account. I didn't know what to expect, but I have to admit it isn't that bad. I use my FaceBook account more than Twitter; it's easier to send messages to friends.
As if that wasn't enough, my next two classes had me on Skype and starting my own blog. If you want a really fun experience, get on Skype with your professor and 23 classmates to discuss your projects. It really is fun. In regards to starting my own blog, well, I can't believe I actually did it. Me, the one who used to look at a computer and run the opposite direction is now on it everyday.
So, for those of you who are afraid of getting on your computers and setting up a FaceBook or Twitter account, or are even considering your own blog, go ahead dive right in. You'll probably have more fun than you ever thought possible. And don't ever think you're too old. Age is a state of mind. If you don't have your own computer, go to your nearest library and get started.
Had I known how much fun I was going to have I never would have waited until I started my masters degree. So, what are you waiting for?
