Ever been to the movies in the past few years and not see 3d animation? Really? Think again. The fact is, 3d graphics are all over the movie screens of today. I know you are trying to visualize where you have not seen some form of it in a recent movie. The fact is, many sets are actually 3d models. Some entire locations are made in 3d. They trick the viewer into thinking they are in another country, when in actuality, they are in a desert or even Canada. Why? The cost is much cheaper. One movie that did this really well was Hallween Resurrection. They CGI 'ed trees and a background for one of the main characters to fall into. It did not even look like a special effect.
The point is, that renderings in todays computer world are becoming increasing lifelike. At this point, they are at the very edge. These can be seen in movies like Avatar and the upcoming 3d feature Tron Legacy where some actors heads are entirely CG. Does this make movies better or worse? Some people hate 3d visuals. That is understandable, but you have to remember that they will never get to the point of where you won't notice it if they don't take chances in the beginning. Remember, the first house wasn't a sky scraper and the first car wasn't a Porsche. It took many years for them to develop and 3d is no different. We are hitting an exciting point with 3d visual effects and software.
Imagine seeing holographic images that are 3d. Someday, that will be available. The world is in for a treat with upcoming visual effects. Everything gets saturated at some point and then there is a dip. If you ride it out, you will see some great and magnificent things regarding 3d graphics.
