subject: Are You Putting Your Hopes In A 'get Thin Quick' Diet Or Exercise Regime? [print this page] If you have become overweight it is likely that at some point you will have been tempted to go on some sort of diet. You may have even got started on an exercise program only to stop it again when the results did not seem to come quickly enough.
The problem with diets and short-term exercise is that they do not work for a long-term problem. If you have become overweight it is because your lifestyle has allowed you to get that way. Your lifestyle is supportive of your weight gain.
Whether it is from eating too much or not doing enough physical activity excess fat weight does not jump on you overnight. It may have taken years (even decades) to accumulate and it is not going to come off in a month or even six months on some crash diet or obsessive exercise regime.
There lies the answer to the problem. It took a certain lifestyle to gain weight and it will take a different lifestyle to take it off. It is the change in lifestyle not a quick fix diet or exercise routine that will get you success. Being in good shape is the result of what you do and do not do every day in the way of eating and activity levels.
If you fix the habits and actions that have caused the weight gain once you fix or remove them the weight will come off automatically. It might mean making changes to your eating and exercise habits and those changes may take 12 months or longer not only to implement but repeat them often enough so they become a habit just like the ones that made you overweight have become a habit.
These repeated changes are much easier to live with than any restrictive or obsessive exercise regime that is so hard to implement that it is likely to fail anyway and you go back to square one over and over again.
Weight loss or improving your health is an ongoing process. One that is made up of hundreds of small steps each one building upon the last one. Each healthy meal and each workout is just one of those small steps. But before long they add up to big results.
Think of it like someone who wins a lottery. You often hear stories of how they spend the money and end up with little to show for it. It was their original lifestyle that catered to that style of living and although they got a lucky break with their winnings their habits of spending, attitudes towards money and savings in the end put them right back to square one. Their 'get rich quick' scheme works no better than a 'get thin quick' scheme.
So stop looking for that 'pie in the sky' and start making the changes you need to make to get into better physical shape and more importantly - stay that way. Not only will you look and feel so much better you will be disease proofing your body which in the midst of a world-wide epidemic of killer disease is alone worth the effort of making the changes you need to make to make weight loss 'stick'.
