The next step was to ask my wife to be whether she would object to me spending weekends away, to my surprise she agreed so I then enquired further as to how I was to progress, my first stop was to the admin officer of 4 QLR who suggested that a Transport Regt would probably be the best option as I already knew a bit about transport.
An appointment was arranged for me to meet the Colonel of the Regiment as he thought I had officer potential, heaven knows why. The meeting went well I thought the CO was a really nice bloke I later found out that is part of his job description as all the other CO's who followed him were really nice as well. A date was set for me to attend a District Assessement Board at an army barracks in Chester to test my suitability as to whether I was fit for purpose. The DAB was quite entertaining and was run by senior TA officers and consisted of command tasks, interviews and discussion groups, I particularly remember the discussion group where the object of the exercise was to be given a series of topics to debate and for 12 of us to put our two penneth in so the senior officers could assess whether we were too quiet or too loud, obviously the way round this was to stay middle of the road. This tactic obviously worked as I managed to pass. So now I was officially an Officer Cadet and I waited for my next course which was the basic training course.
