Whether you have a huge garden outside your home or only a small yard near your villa, you can use these brief tips how to prepare your garden for the cold months. The aim is to create optimal conditions to enjoy the beautiful results with the coming of the spring.
The first thing you should do is to purchase bulbs for the flowers which you want to plant in your garden. If wild animals threaten your garden, choose plants that they do not like - such as narcissus, Siberian squall or tulips. You should clean well the base of the rose bush - remove the fallen leaves, pieces of bark, etc., which can protect the agents of plant diseases during the winter. You can plant new shrubs and evergreens in your yard or garden at the end of fall. This will give them time to root well and adapt to the coldness of winter. You also need water to pour the plenty of perennials, especially the trees in order to accumulate enough moisture in their root system and to help them live during winter.
Another thing that you should do is to prepare the soil for the winter. Dig it and add fertilizer mixture of leaves and bark. Plant the autumn annuals - when the summer plants wilt, there comes time for a little bright color of their autumn substitute's chrysanthemums, pansies and decorative cabbage.
Before the winter comes, you should reduce the height of grass and adjust the mower at a lower level than the standard. In the autumn the grass grows slower but this does not mean that you should not worry about it and keep it. Lower meadow allows the moisture to evaporate faster which will be good for the spring. You can also take care of birds. If you have fruit trees and crops that you don't need, welcome the birds in your garden. Give them some food in the cold months; if you want, build them a small birdhouse.
Another advice is to collect the leaves in the yard and burn them or turn them into nourishing mixture. Take the summer bulbs and place them in the garden storage or in the closet.
In the late fall, plant the spring bulbs that you want to grow for the new season. You should hurry because when the first frost falls the digging of the soil is much more difficult. Select plants for the interior and put them in pots, because of the warmth at home you can enjoy the colors and aromas of many plants (such as narcissus and hyacinth). And last but not least, protect the sensitive to cold plants - bushes, rose trees, small trees. You can cover them with dry leaves wrapped around the base of hemp fabric.
