I think I'm the senior student in my New Media Drivers License class at Michigan State University. On weekly grade postings, most student numbers are in the 39 40 million range. My student number logs in at just over 7 million. (I still have my undergraduate MSU student ID, back when long hair on guys was cool.)
But you can teach an old dog new tricks my favorite new trick is making a bee-line to the Digital Media Resources link at the class website.
Launched way back in January, 2009, the MSU New Media Drivers License class is co-taught by Derek Mehraban, CEO of Ingenex Digital Media in Ann Arbor, Michal Lorenc, Head of Dedicated Client Services, Google Canada, and Dr. Richard Cole, Professor and Chair of the Department of Advertising, Public Relations and Retailing at Michigan State University.
The course is designed to train students in the ways of new media and digital marketing. A speedy review of the class syllabus reads like a What's What of the world of new media and digital marketing: blog set-up and content development; digital PR; mastering social media sites like Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and YouTube; SEO (search engine optimization); Google AdWords and online marketing; and other interesting new media widgets and gadgets such as Delicious, Digg, Flickr and SlideShare.
One of my favorite things about the class is the Digital Media Resources collection. It's like a bookmarking service dedicated to new media. We students are required to add four new resources to the collection each week. At twelve weeks and 75 students, we should have built a database of 900 digital media resources by August. Student labor at its best
All of the Digital Media Resources online links include a clever title and short description, as well as tags to help users sift, sort and search. Best of all, the database is our gift to everyone it's available for free at the public site of the New Media Drivers License course.
While it's not as good as taking the class (highly recommended), the Digital Media Resources database is a great start for anyone wanting to learn more about digital marketing and social media. Even for old guys like me enjoy!
