subject: The Career As A Cosmetologist [print this page]

The field of Cosmetology is growing bigger and faster than any other profession. As people, both men and women, are becoming increasingly aware and self-conscious of their appearances, beauty salons are mushrooming everywhere to tend to this growing need. The professionals in this area are generally called cosmetologists. However, there are many different specializations one can diverge from as a cosmetologist. They could become a skincare specialist, makeup artist, hairstylist, hairdresser, shampooer, esthetician, or even nail technician.

For one to become a cosmetologist, they will need to graduate from an accredited Cosmetology School, and should be at least 16 years of age. In several states, a prerequisite might include completion of high school or equivalency diploma. Depending on the program, the duration will vary. For example, in hairstyling programs, students may be trained up to nine months. On the other hand, manicure, facial or makeup programs would be shorter ranging between two weeks to six months. Some may pursue their Masters program after that. For any personal appearance workers, except for shampooers, will need to attain a practicing license. They will need to sit for a state-administered licensing exam of their specialized field.

Like most professions, cosmetologists do also have career advancements opportunities as they become more experienced. They could manage or open beauty salons, become independent or hired image consultants, or even become sales representatives for products to care for personal appearances. Likewise, if they have had years of experience in their field and are pioneers with a good reputation, they could even look at Cosmetology School jobs available such as to become an instructor there. On that note, with the field of cosmetology rapidly growing, so are schools; thus Cosmetology School jobs would be widely available as well.

Although the field of cosmetology is not the conventional dream job, this career requires much patience and passion to do well in. It is an honorable profession, and is much needed in todays society.
