What saddens me, is the lack of new builds that ever achieve the beauty of period properties. I am an interior designer by trade, www.kb-interiors.co.ukand help with interiors from initial concept throught to completion.
I have recently been asked to help advise a client who have bought a plot in Wiltshire and as I am based in Northumberland, I set up a virtual moodboard/scrapbook, to help them with the build without costly meetings and moodboards. We really want it to look old and with the use of smooth render, hardwood 8ft sash windows and reclaimed Georgian wooden floorboards, will anyone know the difference? Why can't new builds adopt some of the more period styles of properties, unless it is a contemporary build and in a league of its own architecturally? I felt landscaping and bedding plants to age the property was a key factor, as all too often new builds are plonked on a piece of land and no softening or ageing is taken into consideration in the lanscaping. Has anyone had a new build that they are delighted with or adopted this approach and how did you find the process?
Clever combining of modern additions such as an orangery to house a kitchen and a pool room.
I would be fascinated to hear from anyone who has undertaken new builds replicating period properties and how successful was the project and what challenges you faced and what materials did you source, was it a lot more expensive?
